Closing Practice Summer 2024

I can't go back.

Once I learned about functional medicine and how to view a person holistically (as one integrated system) and not in pieces (neurology, gastroenterology, cardiology, etc.), I began to see people healing themselves through lifestyle changes. Everything in our body is connected and nothing works in isolation. Functional medicine pulls back and examines each individual as a whole person. I've seen this process improve and even reverse chronic illnesses (asthma, autism, Alzheimer's, crohn's, diabetes and more).

You are in control

I believe healing can be in your own hands. My hope is to help you identify the root cause of your child’s or your own illness and work together to make meaningful changes that will move you and your family towards health.

I’m a conventionally trained, board-certified pediatrician who turned to functional medicine for my own health issues. Through my own experience a new world was opened up to me and I want to share it with as many patients as possible. The conventional model does not allow me to offer the services I want to provide, as appointment times are limited, comprehensive laboratory testing is not typically covered by insurance, and it’s nearly impossible to modify lifestyle and implement changes with a single annual appointment. Cactus + Stone offers a new approach to patients and parents who are seeking something more for their health.

Functional medicine approaches health differently and puts the power back in the patients' hands. You are in control of your own health and I want to show you how.

Dr. Ann McCarthy, MD, FAAP, IFMCP

Dr. McCarthy brings a unique model of pediatric medical care to New Mexico. She completed her medical training at the top pediatric residency program in the nation, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). She obtained Functional Medicine certification through the Institute of Functional Medicine, completed Pediatric Integrative Medicine in Residency training through the University of Arizona, and spent time studying at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine.

While at CHOP, Dr. McCarthy had a productive career in academic medicine, with several publications, research awards and projects that focused on neurodevelopment of children with congenital heart disease. She now has the desire to combine her academic background and functional medicine to produce meaningful results for patients and families. Like many, Dr. McCarthy first found functional medicine for herself and now is helping others heal themselves with the principles of functional medicine.

Dr. McCarthy came to medicine after nearly a decade of working in the financial industry as a consultant in mergers and acquisitions and at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. She then obtained her post-baccalaureate at the University of Pennsylvania and medical degree from Temple University.

Her husband is a heart surgeon who brought her to New Mexico, where they now live with their two sons. She is also the founder of Baby Boxes MD, a subscription box company that sends out monthly boxes to new moms during the first year of a baby’s life.
